In a recent interview on Symfoni TV, Obunike Ohaegbu, a former Federal Commissioner of the Public Complaints Commission (PPC), spoke on opposition politics, leadership experience, and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections in Nigeria.
During the interview, Ohaegbu stated, “Peter Obi was governor of Anambra State; you can’t say he is new, even if the NDC is new.” He made the remark while discussing the growing role of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) and the political relevance of former Anambra State governor Peter Obi in national politics.
He explained that political experience should not be overlooked when evaluating candidates and emerging political platforms. According to him, Obi’s years as governor of Anambra State provided him with administrative exposure and governance experience that remain relevant in Nigeria’s political space today.
Ohaegbu noted that while newer political movements may still be developing their structures and national reach, leaders associated with them can still possess significant political experience and public recognition.
He further stated that many Nigerians are increasingly paying attention to competence, governance records, and leadership style rather than focusing only on how long a political party has existed within the country’s democratic system.
The former commissioner also argued that coalition-building and political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections are creating opportunities for both established and emerging political platforms to compete more actively in national politics.
Ohaegbu concluded that Nigeria’s evolving political environment may encourage voters to assess candidates based on their past performance and perceived capacity to govern, rather than solely on party history or political tradition.
