According to a report by Metro on Thursday, July 9, 2026, England have been dealt a significant blow ahead of their FIFA World Cup quarter-final against Norway after defender Jarell Quansah received a two-match suspension from FIFA following his red card in the Round of 16 victory over Mexico.

Quansah was sent off during England’s dramatic 3-2 win after being shown a straight red card for a challenge on Mexico’s Jesus Gallardo in the second half.

Although the automatic red-card suspension would have ruled him out of the quarter-final, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee imposed an additional one-match ban after determining that the tackle constituted serious foul play.

As a result, Quansah will miss not only Saturday’s quarter-final against Norway but also a potential semi-final against either Argentina or Switzerland on July 15 if England advance.

FIFA confirmed the punishment in a statement, explaining that Quansah had been handed a two-match suspension for violating Article 14 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. The governing body added that the ban would be served during England’s upcoming World Cup fixtures in line with Article 69 of its disciplinary regulations.

The Football Association reportedly considered appealing the dismissal after FIFA overturned the one-match suspension previously given to United States forward Folarin Balogun. However, FIFA upheld Quansah’s red card and extended his suspension beyond the standard one-match ban.

Following England’s victory over Mexico, head coach Thomas Tuchel questioned the consistency of FIFA’s disciplinary decisions, citing Balogun’s case as an example. He argued that reversing some disciplinary rulings while allowing others to stand created uncertainty over how such decisions were being applied during the tournament.

Tuchel also maintained that Balogun’s challenge did not warrant a red card and questioned who had the authority to overturn decisions already made by match officials and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). He further wondered whether similar reviews would be applied to yellow cards shown to other players, including Declan Rice and France winger Michael Olise.

Meanwhile, England enter the quarter-final with several players at risk of suspension. Declan Rice, Marc Guehi and Nico O’Reilly were all booked against Mexico, while Jude Bellingham received a yellow card in the Round of 32 victory over DR Congo.

Under FIFA’s disciplinary rules, any player who accumulates two yellow cards across the Round of 32, Round of 16 and quarter-final stages will receive a one-match suspension. Consequently, another booking against Norway would rule any affected player out of a potential World Cup semi-final.
