BREAKING: Kingibe Admits Electoral Act “Not What We Intended,” Promises Amendments Under Pressure
According to a report by Daily Post, on Tuesday April 28, 2026, Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has called on Nigerians to put steady pressure on the government to reform the country’s electoral laws, stating that such reforms are necessary to strengthen democracy and improve public confidence in elections.
Kingibe spoke about ongoing concerns over Nigeria’s electoral system and the need for continuous improvement in the way elections are conducted, she rejected claims that Nigeria’s ballot papers do not have proper security features.
According to her, election materials have always included safety measures to prevent misuse or fraud, she insisted that the system has never allowed voters to use unauthorized ballot papers during elections.
The senator explained that she had earlier taken part in efforts to improve the country’s electoral framework, she said the reform process involved lawmakers from both chambers of the National Assembly, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and civil society organisations, the goal, she noted, was to design a system that would support free and fair elections.
Kingibe stated that the team spent about two years working on a reform document that was widely agreed upon by stakeholders, however, she expressed disappointment that parts of the agreed proposals were later changed, she questioned why such changes were made after broad consultations had already taken place.
She raised concerns about the use of technology in elections, according to her, if the government invests in electronic and digital voting tools, then they should be fully used, she questioned the logic of spending money on such systems if they are not properly implemented during elections.
”Every aspect of electoral act we passed was turned upside down but it will be amended when there is enough pressure from Nigerians,” she said.
