United States President Donald Trump has confirmed that a shooting incident at the White House disrupted a high-profile event, describing how Pete Hegseth resisted assistance when he and others were being evacuated as security forces responded to what authorities consider a failed assassination attempt.
In a video posted by Al Jazeera, Trump made this statement while emphasizing the rapid intervention of the Secret Service and law enforcement, noting that the suspect was subdued quickly and that key officials, including himself, the first lady, and the vice president, were safely evacuated from the scene.
He made the statement to also reinforce public confidence in the security response and demonstrate resilience in the face of threats against national leadership and democratic institutions.
The president detailed that the attacker, armed with multiple weapons, breached a security checkpoint before being neutralized by Secret Service agents. He commended the swift actions of the officers, revealing that one agent sustained a gunshot at close range but survived due to a bulletproof vest.
He confirmed he personally spoke with the officer, who is in stable condition and high spirits. He further acknowledged concerns about the security infrastructure at the venue, stressing the need for enhanced protective measures, including proposals for a more secure facility within the White House complex.
Trump linked the incident to previous assassination attempts in recent years, which happened in Butler, Pennsylvania, less than two years ago and in Palm Beach, Florida.
