BREAKING: Assad Family Scandal Explodes as Cousin Faces Public Trial in Syria

Published

According to a report by Anadolu Agency on Sunday, April 26, 2026, Atef Najib, a cousin of ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and former head of political security in the southern city of Daraa, appeared on Sunday before the Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus, in what authorities described as part of Syria’s first wave of transitional justice proceedings.

According to state-linked broadcaster Al-Ikhbariya, Najib was seen inside the defendant’s enclosure as he was brought before the court in the Syrian capital. The proceedings mark one of the most high-profile cases since the change in Syria’s political leadership.

The television station quoted an unnamed judge as saying the hearings represent “the first trials of transitional justice in Syria,” involving both detainees and other accused individuals who remain at large.

The judge reportedly listed several fugitives, including Bashar al-Assad, his brother and commander of the Fourth Division Maher al-Assad, former Defence Minister Fahd Jassem al-Freij, and former senior intelligence officials Laith al-Ali and Wafiq Nasser. These individuals have not been apprehended.

The court adjourned the session until May 10 as proceedings continue.

Najib, who was arrested in January last year, is a former military academy graduate who served in various intelligence roles before becoming head of the Political Security Branch in Daraa. He is accused of playing a key role in early security crackdowns in the city, widely regarded as the birthplace of Syria’s 2011 uprising.

He also faces allegations of involvement in the arrest and alleged torture of children who had written anti-government slogans on walls in Daraa. That incident is widely considered one of the catalysts that triggered nationwide protests against the Assad government.

The trial is being closely watched as part of broader efforts by Syria’s transitional authorities to address alleged abuses committed during the country’s long-running conflict. In December 2024, Bashar al-Assad, who had ruled Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia, effectively ending decades of Ba’ath Party rule that began in 1963.

Following Assad’s departure, a transitional administration led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa was formed in January 2025, pledging political reform and accountability for past violations.

The current proceedings against Najib are among the earliest public court cases linked to alleged wartime abuses, signalling what officials describe as an initial step toward legal reckoning for crimes committed during the conflict.
