Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has spoken on governance priorities and public reactions to development projects in Nigeria, particularly referencing recent events in Abia State.

Adeyanju made the remarks during a live interview on Glitch Africa Studios, where he discussed leadership choices, project relevance, and how citizens respond to government initiatives.

In his statement, he raised concerns about the type of projects that generate public excitement despite ongoing economic challenges.

He said, “I saw that during Christmas, Alex Otti commissioned a fountain in Abia; people were jubilating,” suggesting that public celebrations may not always align with the urgency of citizens’ needs.

According to him, the reaction to such projects reflects a broader issue in how development is perceived, with less attention often given to initiatives that directly impact livelihoods.

Adeyanju argued that governance should focus more on critical sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, and economic development, rather than projects with limited long-term benefits.

He further noted that while public officials may undertake visible projects, the real measure of leadership lies in addressing pressing socio-economic concerns affecting everyday Nigerians.

The activist called for a shift in both leadership priorities and public expectations, emphasizing that citizens must demand more impactful governance outcomes.

He also stressed that accountability plays a key role, as voters influence governance standards through the issues they prioritize and celebrate.

Adeyanju concluded by urging Nigerians to adopt a more critical approach to evaluating government performance, insisting that meaningful development should take precedence over symbolic or less impactful projects.
