Pressure Mounts on Thomas Tuchel as England FA Receives Sack Verdict

Published

On July 16, 2026, Express Sport featured a story stating that former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira has voiced his backing for Thomas Tuchel. He believes that the Football Association would be wrong to fire the England manager following the Three Lions’ heartbreaking World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina.

England’s opportunity to reach their first World Cup final since 1966 came to an end with a sorrowful 2-1 loss against the current champions. Anthony Gordon scored for England in the second half, but Argentina made a late rally, with Enzo Fernandez leveling the score and Lautaro Martinez netting a winner just before the end, advancing Lionel Scaloni’s squad to the final against Spain.

The unfortunate defeat resulted in harsh criticism of Tuchel’s strategies, particularly his choice to make multiple defensive changes after England took the lead. Numerous analysts believed that England became overly cautious, letting Argentina dominate the game and ultimately overturn the result.

Despite this backlash, Vieira contends that replacing managers after only one tournament would be an error. During The Rest Is Football podcast, the former Crystal Palace manager stressed that Tuchel merits additional time to apply what he learned from his first significant tournament with England.

“I support stability,” Vieira mentioned. “It would be unreasonable to dismiss Tuchel or change coaches at this point. This was his first notable tournament, and there were both advantages and disadvantages.”

Vieira also pointed out that the German coach would acquire important experience by interacting closely with the players throughout the tournament, gaining insights into the team during both favorable and difficult periods.

He expressed hope that England could compete for the UEFA European Championship in 2028 under Tuchel’s leadership, asserting that the Three Lions should strive to win the tournament rather than merely advancing to the later rounds.

The Football Association reportedly aligns with Vieira’s views. FA chief executive Mark Bullingham has reiterated the governing body’s support for Tuchel, who signed a contract extension earlier this year that will last until the conclusion of Euro 2028.

Tuchel has also stated that he has no intention of resigning after the defeat. The former Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich manager confirmed his dedication to guiding England into the next European Championship, even after the disappointment of missing out on the World Cup final.

England will now shift their focus to Saturday’s third-place match against France, hoping to finish their World Cup journey on a positive note. At the same time, the FA remains assured that Tuchel is the ideal leader to move the national team ahead, emphasizing stability despite the upsetting exit in the semi-finals.
