England Ace Breaks Silence on Thomas Tuchel’s Tactical Decisions After World Cup Exit

Published

According to a report by Metro on Thursday July 16, 2026, England defender Marc Guehi has admitted he did not agree with the tactical approach adopted after the Three Lions took the lead in their 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

England looked on course to reach the final when Anthony Gordon broke the deadlock in the 55th minute, finishing from close range after connecting with a cross from Morgan Rogers. However, Argentina mounted a late comeback, with Enzo Fernandez equalising before Lautaro Martinez scored a stoppage-time winner to send the defending champions into the final against Spain.

Following the defeat, questions were raised over England manager Thomas Tuchel’s decision to adopt a more defensive approach after his side went in front. The German coach introduced defender Ezri Konsa in place of goalscorer Gordon before later bringing on Nico O’Reilly and Dan Burn as England attempted to protect their advantage.

The tactical changes came under heavy criticism after England struggled to retain possession and absorb Argentina’s sustained pressure. During the period between Gordon’s goal and Martinez’s winner, England reportedly had just 12 per cent possession.

Speaking after the match, Guehi suggested England should have continued attacking instead of retreating into a defensive shape. “Once we went 1-0 up we seemed to just try and hold on, which at this level is just not enough, so I’m gutted,” Guehi said.

The defender added that he felt England should have maintained their attacking intent rather than sitting back. “We should have carried on. We should have carried on pushing.”

England’s defeat ended their hopes of reaching a first World Cup final since 1966, while Argentina progressed to another global showpiece where they will face Spain in Sunday’s final.
