Real Madrid Shake Up Leadership Group with New 2026/27 Captaincy Order

According to a report by Madrid Universal on Thursday July 16, 2026, Real Madrid will begin the 2026/27 campaign with a new leadership structure following Dani Carvajal’s departure. Jose Mourinho has returned for his second spell as manager and will oversee a refreshed squad featuring a newly appointed captaincy group.

According to reports, Federico Valverde has been promoted to first captain. Vinicius Junior will serve as vice-captain, while Thibaut Courtois becomes third captain and Rodrygo completes the four-man leadership team for the upcoming campaign.

Mourinho has already met with Courtois and Rodrygo during the opening days of pre-season. Courtois continues recovering from the injury sustained during the World Cup, while Rodrygo remains sidelined after suffering a serious knee ligament and meniscus injury.

Valverde’s appointment follows Real Madrid’s long-standing policy of awarding the captaincy to the most senior first-team player. The Uruguayan previously described captaining the club as one of his greatest ambitions, making this promotion a significant personal milestone.

After joining Real Madrid from Penarol in 2016, Valverde spent time with Castilla and later Deportivo La Coruna before establishing himself in the senior squad. He is now preparing for his ninth consecutive season with the first team.

Despite experiencing disagreements with former manager Xabi Alonso and reported tensions within the dressing room, Valverde remains a central figure in Mourinho’s plans. The Portuguese coach reportedly views the midfielder as an essential leader for his rebuilding project.

Vinicius Junior also moves into a more prominent leadership position as second captain. Although he joined alongside Courtois, the Brazilian ranks higher because of the club’s internal registration rules and the preference for an outfield captain over a goalkeeper.

The new captaincy group signals the beginning of a fresh era at Real Madrid. With Mourinho back and several experienced players gone, Valverde, Vinicius, Courtois and Rodrygo will be expected to provide strong leadership as the club pursues major honours.
