Patrick Vieira Reveals What England Are Painfully Missing After World Cup Exit

Published

According to a report by Metro Sport on Thursday, July 16, 2026, Patrick Vieira believes England’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina exposed deeper problems within the national team, bringing their tournament journey to a disappointing end.

England appeared to be on their way to the final after Anthony Gordon gave them the lead in the 55th minute in Atlanta, sending the travelling supporters into celebration. However, the momentum quickly shifted as the Three Lions retreated into a defensive shape, allowing Argentina to dominate the closing stages of the match.

Instead of pushing for another goal, Thomas Tuchel’s men focused on protecting their narrow advantage, a strategy that ultimately backfired. Enzo Fernández levelled the score late in the game before Lautaro Martínez completed the comeback with a stoppage-time header from Lionel Messi’s cross.

Speaking after the match, Vieira insisted England’s problems extend beyond tactical decisions or substitutions. The former Arsenal midfielder argued that the team lacks a defined footballing identity, something he believes is crucial for success at the highest level.

“The biggest question is not just tactical,” Vieira said. “It can affect the result, but there is also a lack of identity in this England team. They are not playing their own style. Teams like Spain and Argentina have a clear identity. Whether they are ahead, behind or level, they continue to play the same way. England do not.”

Vieira also criticised England’s defensive approach in the final minutes, noting that despite filling their penalty area with defenders, they still conceded twice, including the decisive goal from a cross.

“England’s strength is playing aggressively, pressing high and competing for first and second balls,” he added. “They are not built to sit deep and defend inside their own box. The way they defended late in the game is not what England should represent.”

Argentina will now take on Spain in the World Cup final, while England must once again assess what went wrong, with Vieira believing the team must first establish a clear identity for the future.
