Pep Guardiola Emerges as Favourite to Become Next England Manager

A report from Metro dated July 16, 2026, indicates that Pep Guardiola, the former Manchester City manager, has become the top choice to take over as the next head coach of England if the Football Association opts to sever ties with Thomas Tuchel following the disappointment at the World Cup.

Guardiola, who departed from Manchester City after an extremely successful tenure at the Etihad Stadium, is currently favored by bookmakers to lead the England team after Tuchel’s squad faced a heartbreaking semi-final loss to Argentina.

Initially, England appeared set to reach their first World Cup final since 1966 when Anthony Gordon scored, putting them ahead against the reigning champions. Nevertheless, Argentina managed to stage a late comeback in Atlanta, as Enzo Fernandez equalized and Lautaro Martinez netted a last-minute winner to progress Lionel Messi’s team.

This loss has intensified scrutiny on Tuchel, and several analysts have questioned his tactical choices after England retreated defensively following their opening goal. Former Tottenham player Jamie O’Hara has even suggested that the German coach should be removed, asserting that his strategy cost England a spot in the final.

Despite Tuchel having a contract that extends until Euro 2028 and expressing his intention to remain in the role, Guardiola’s name has been frequently brought up as a possible replacement if the FA determines that a change is necessary.

Guardiola would offer extensive experience for the role after securing his place as one of the top managers in football history. During his tenure at Manchester City, he captured several Premier League titles, domestic trophies, and the club’s inaugural Champions League title.

His possession-focused approach and success in nurturing top-level players might attract the FA as England looks for their first major international trophy since the 1966 World Cup.

However, Guardiola is not the sole candidate under consideration. The manager of Newcastle United, Eddie Howe, ranks as the second favorite for the position after having been previously associated with the England role, while former interim coach Lee Carsley is also listed among the top contenders.

Mauricio Pochettino, who has a background in English football management, is another name gaining attention, alongside Frank Lampard, a former Chelsea midfielder, making up the top five favorites.

Additional candidates reportedly include Graham Potter, Carlo Ancelotti, Kieran McKenna, Steven Gerrard, and Unai Emery.
