JUST IN: Legal Battle Looms as Court Takes Up FOI Case on Kano Projects

Published

A Federal High Court in Kano will on Monday hear a Freedom of Information (FOI) suit filed against the National Assembly and some federal lawmakers from Kano State over the execution of constituency projects.

The suit, filed by a Kano-based civil society group, seeks to compel the defendants to provide detailed information on the implementation and utilisation of constituency projects allocated to lawmakers from the state.

The plaintiff is demanding accountability on how billions of naira appropriated for constituency projects in Kano have been spent, citing concerns over poor execution, abandonment of projects, and lack of transparency.

The case is brought under the Freedom of Information Act, which guarantees citizens the right to access public records and information held by government institutions.

The suit names the Clerk of the National Assembly, the Accountant-General of the Federation, and several Kano federal lawmakers as defendants.

At the last adjourned date, the court had fixed Monday, April 27, 2026, for definite hearing of the matter.

The development is seen as a significant step towards promoting transparency and good governance in the management of public funds meant for constituency projects across Kano State.
