Why Chaves file disciplinary action against underperforming Kelechi Nwakali

Following GD Chaves’ relegation-confirming loss against FC Famalicão, attention has shifted from the on-field disappointment to off-field actions, particularly those of Super Eagles midfielder Kelechi Nwakali.....CONTINUE READING THE ARTICLE FROM THE SOURCE

Soccernet reports that during the 1-0 defeat on Friday, which marked the end of Chaves’ two-year stint in the Liga Portugal Betclic, Nwakali was allegedly spotted using his phone while on the substitute’s bench. This behavior has prompted the club’s management to file a disciplinary case against him.

The defeat itself was a bitter pill to swallow for Chaves, with Gustavo Sá’s goal in stoppage time securing the win for Famalicão and sealing Chaves’ fate of relegation from the top tier of Portuguese football.

However, Nwakali’s actions have added fuel to the fire, as the club’s management is reportedly considering punitive measures for what they perceive as a breach of discipline.

This move reflects a similar incident in 2022 when Nwakali parted ways with his former club, SD Huesca, due to disciplinary issues, although the exact nature of those issues remains undisclosed.

Despite featuring in 19 league games before representing Nigeria at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, Nwakali found himself surplus to requirements upon his return to Huesca. Now, with Chaves facing the challenges of the second division, Nwakali’s future hangs in the balance.

Whether he will remain with the club or seek opportunities elsewhere depends on the outcome of the disciplinary case and his ability to demonstrate the commitment and focus necessary for success, as emphasized by his former coach.
