BREAKING: I could have done a better job

The Serbian international played far more than he would have expected in his debut campaign at Chelsea, and speaking to the club in an interview at the conclusion of the season, he spoke about how he thought it had gone:

“For me personally this season I wouldn’t say amazing but I didn’t expect to play this many games. I can improve and I will next season and I want to be a more complete goalkeeper, “Petrovic was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

“There were games when I could have done a better job but in the end I can be happy and that gives me confidence for next season as well.”

Those thoughts pretty closely mirror how most Blues fans feel about Petrovic’s season. At first they were pleased to get him in and thought he looked better than Sanchez. But as time wore on we saw more mistakes and more doubts about Petrovic’s long term viability.

Great to see a player who knows they can do better

What is really positive is hearing the goalkeeper say he can do better, and we hope that’s the case.

He’s still very young, especially for a goalie, and should have plenty of scope to get better in the near future. Given the needs in other parts of the team, and given both Petrovic and Sanchez were signed only last summer, we think it’s likely they remain our options for next season.

We will need them both to step their game up if we want to really compete for Champions League football next season. An improved defence ahead of them should also help, with likely defensive reinforcements as well as a set piece coach coming in to try and help out some of this season’s weak points.
