Spanish newspaper AS have today published a long piece about Chelsea’s all but completed move to sign Estevao Willian. After 3 weeks of intense negotiations, the Brazilian 17 year old is set to sign a deal which brings him to Stamford Bridge next summer.....CONTINUE READING THE ARTICLE FROM THE SOURCE

AS are well sourced on these matters mainly because they were quite clearly hoping that a Spanish side would land the young talent. Real Madrid are currently benefitting hugely from their historic investment in Brazilian talents like Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo, and they have Willian’s teammate Endrick arriving this summer.

Barcelona have tried a similar strategy, with less success in the case of Vitor Roque. The striker was the most expensive South American transfer ever, but this deal will eclipse this one if it reaches all of its various add ons, variables and bonuses.

Some of those can be triggered over the next 12 months while he remains at his current club Palmeiras, so we could see his price rising before our eyes if he performs well.

A leaf out of Madrid’s book

In this case it’s going to be Chelsea who make the decisive first move to secure a young superstar before the rest of Europe can get their act together. The details of some of the transfer fees have already emerged, but AS claim to know the contract details too.

They say that Willian will sign a 7 year deal with a club option for an 8th.

That would align with the club’s overall policy on making sure all their young players are tied down long term, and means their €65m or so investment in him looks good value – if he lives up to his potential. AS call him a “generational talent,” which one would certainly hope to be the case given the crazy investment being made here.
