Six Less-Obvious Signs to Watch For
1. Skin Changes on the Breast
Look for dimpling (skin that looks like an orange peel), puckering, redness, or thickened skin. These changes may be subtle at first but can signal underlying issues.
2. Nipple Alterations
This includes retraction (nipple turning inward), inversion (newly inverted), or a change in appearance—say, scaling, crustiness, or discharge. Even discharge that is not bloody (clear or tinged) should be checked.
3. Swelling in the Breast, Underarm, or Collarbone
Swollen tissue or thickening in parts of the breast, or enlarged lymph nodes under the arm or near the collarbone, can precede lump detection.
4. Persistent Pain or Tenderness
While many benign conditions can cause breast pain (especially related to menstrual cycles), pain that doesn’t resolve or appears in one spot may be a red flag.
5. Changes in Breast Shape or Size
Sudden or uneven changes in breast contour, size, or symmetry, especially when it’s new, deserve attention even if no lump is felt.
6. Skin or Nipple Discharge or Sensation
Discharge without squeezing (especially if it’s bloody or clear), or unusual sensations like itchiness, burning, or skin irritation around the nipple area.
